Worship/Tech Ministry Vision

It is our belief at University Baptist Church that the Worship team is a vital part to the ministry of this body of believers.

Members of this team should view their function as ministers of the gospel through music and song.

What Is Worship?

What is worship and why do we do it?

  • Through corporate worship, we are able to remind others, remind ourselves, and sing to the Lord praise and adoration. He alone is worthy and deserving our praise. “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” (Psalm 145:3-4)

  • The primary function, then, is to lead the congregation in true worship under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth”. (John 4:24)

  • Through participating on the worship/tech team, we remind and teach others about the character of God as seen through His inerrant and infallible Word. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:16-17)

How should we worship?

  • There is no calling issued for “performances” and “showmanship” – only true praise and worship. Therefore, members must strive continually through prayer, obedience, and example to have a pure heart before God and others. “ I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2)

Guidelines + Requirements

Guidelines and Requirements

1. Calling

It is very important for those who participate in the Worship Ministry to feel that they are “called” to the ministry of worship and have a desire to see others worship. We believe every person has been given gifts for the building and edification for the church body.

2. Lifestyle

Participants must be born-again believers of Christ, and their lifestyle must resemble that of a born-again Christian. Participants must be worshipers on and off the platform. Anyone who has difficulty worshiping at home or in the congregation is not ready to be a on the platform leading others in worship.

3. Talents and Skills

Although we recognize the importance of a pure heart, the musician and vocalists also need to have enough skill so that they can follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and lead “distractionless” worship.

  • Musicians and vocalists should have open hearts to receive advice, correction, training, and should be committed to becoming proficiently skilled at their ministry. “Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it”. (1 Chronicles 15:22)

  • One does not need to be a professional musician to worship the Lord, but God honors the discipline of additional practice and preparation. “Don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong.” - Bob Kauflin in his book Worship Matters

4. Commitment

Worship Team members should be actively engaged at UBC and dedicated to UBC’s vision and to the leadership of its pastors and other leaders.

This commitment includes their prayers, regular attendance, and tithes/offerings and involvement in a church activities and groups.

  • Those who commit to serving on the Worship Team are asked to commit to a mid-week rehearsal (on the weeks you serve) and they are expected to do their best to make sure other commitments do not interfere with their ability to serve on the worship/tech team on a weekly basis. Worship/tech team members commit to always coming prepared and ready to worship.

  • Because we value the importance of family, prospective worship/tech team members should not join the team without the full support of their family.

5. Attendances and Punctuality

Attendance and punctuality are very important factors for being a member of the worship/tech team.

  • On the weeks you serve, the mid-week rehearsal is mandatory and members should arrive ready to work on the designated material.

  • Poor attendance and showing up late for rehearsals demonstrate a lack of discipline and respect for the Lord’s ministry and the other team members.

  • Those who are unable to attend rehearsals should not expect to participate in the worship/tech team the following Sunday unless prior arrangements with the worship leader/media team leader have been made.

6. Attire

As leaders, members must dress appropriately.

  • We have no desire to make a dress code. We just ask that all team members strive to avoid distraction or offense due to our attire.

7. New Applicants and Waiting Periods

  • We have a few open spots for our teams at Main and a number of spots open for our teams at East.

  • Anyone interested in serving is encouraged to set up an appointment with Phil (Director of Worship) or Michael (Tech Specialist) to discuss the material on this page and address any questions you may have.

  • The prospective worship/tech team member will also have a brief and informal audition after filling out the application. This could be one on one with a band leader or with a team at the end of a band rehearsal.

  • Additional reading may also be required, at the discretion of the church leadership.

8. Schedule Conflicts, Etc.

  • If at any time, a member (including visual equipment operators, sound engineers, etc.) cannot attend a service, rehearsal, etc. they must notify the Director of Worship or Tech Specialist in advance if at all possible so that proper adjustments can be made.

  • If you know you can’t make it on your scheduled date, you will be responsible for checking with other team members to see who could fill your spot. Band & tech leaders will help with this, but you will be responsible for making sure the hole gets filled.

9. Audio and Visual Operators, Etc.

Sound engineers and visual equipment operators are important members of the worship ministry.

  • Visual equipment operators are asked to arrive early so they can operate the slides while the worship team rehearses.

  • These members should be attentive at all times during the service and ready to make changes “on the fly” where necessary.

The audio engineers are also asked to arrive early, and help the worship team set up as much as possible.

  • Audio engineers must be alert and responsive, especially during the worship, and should be ready to make adjustments quickly.

  • Audio engineers should actively prepare by working with the Media Team Leader, listening to the music for the weeks they are scheduled to volunteer, etc.

10. Lastly, open communication is of vital importance.

If at any time a team member is confused, discouraged, or unhappy with the way things may be happening at a given time, they are encouraged to speak with the Director of Worship or the Tech Specialist. The only way to deal with hurt feelings, resentment, confusion, etc. is to bring it out into the open so that the Lord can help us work through it as a team.

* It is important to state that we intend for the information in this manual to serve as a guideline, but we realize that exceptions will occur.
