Three Questions - From Genesis 42-43
What does this passage teach us historically?
Summary: In Genesis 42-43, we see Jacob, during a severe famine, sending his 10 sons to Egypt for grain. In Egypt, the sons are confronted by Joseph with accusations of being spies. The tests from Joseph are to reveal the sons’ troubled consciences, helping them to see their guilt. In Chapter 43, we see Jacob sending his nine sons back to Egypt for more grain. The sons are met with hospitality, compassion, and generosity. The passage ends saying, “And they drank and were merry with him.”
The text and message were organized around eight steps, starting in desolation and ending in celebration. What were the circumstances in which the story took place? How were these circumstances a part of testing the characters within the story?
How were the guilty in the story handled by Joseph? What were some emotional expressions and noticeable actions you saw from the sons of Jacob? From Jacob? From Judah? From Joseph?
What were some clear expressions in 43:15-34 of hospitality, compassion, and generosity?
How do these two chapters help us understand God’s providence and love for His people?
What are some ways Joseph’s life parallels Jesus’ life? How do these similarities point us to the gospel?
What does this passage teach us theologically?
