Read reverently the passage together and pray. 

Main Passage: 1 Corinthians 5:1-13

Big Idea: A maturing church will sometimes need to remove its members for God’s redemptive purposes.

Work through the chapter. 

  • Vv. 1-5

    • What was the issue the church was involved in? 

    • How did this issue demonstrate no distress over sin?

    • How did this issue demonstrate no discipline over sin? 

    • What does Paul insist that the church do? What do you make of Church discipline as it is laid out in vv. 4-5? See also Matthew 18:15-20 to assist you in discussing church discipline. 

  • Vv. 6- 8

    • What is meant by “a little leaven leavens the whole lump?”  How does this proverb relate to church discipline? 

    • According to verse 8, what effect does celebrating over “the Passover Lamb” have on us as a church? 

  • Vv. 9-13

    • According to verses 9-10, what group of people are we to associate with, and for what reasons do you suppose we are to do so? 

    • According to verses 11-13, what group of people are we NOT to associate with, and for what reasons do you suppose we are not to do so?  

Apply the chapter

  • Are you a true and sincere member of the Lord’s church?

    • Think upon Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43.
