Read Genesis 46:1-47:12 (It will take you 10 minutes to read aloud)

Genealogies are not fillers. They are the bloodline leading to Jesus.”  ~ Pastor Jason

Main Claim: When we trust who God is, we can go wherever He leads.

Three Questions - From Genesis 46:1-47:12

What does this passage teach us historically?

  • Summary: Our passage for Sunday follows Jacob’s journey to Egypt with his family after God reassures him not to fear. We looked at who God is as He reassures Jacob, who journeys with his family to Egypt, meets and blesses Pharaoh, and settles in Goshen to enjoy a sweet family reunion.

    • What happened in Beersheba between God and His people? (see 46:1-7; 21:33; 26:23-25)

    • What reason did you hear for Jacob needing a personal reminder of God’s faithfulness to His covenant?

    • What was the significance Pastor Jason teased out for us regarding the genealogy in 46:8-27?

    • In what ways did the sentence “Jacob blessed Pharaoh” help us understand the central claim of 46:1-47:12? Think Gen. 12:3.

What does this passage teach us theologically?

  • There are three characteristics of God that we see in this passage.

    • God is faithful.

    • God is sovereign.

    • God is present.

  • How can meditating on who God is help us take steps in following His lead? Talk about this.  What does it mean that God is faithful to us? What does it mean that God is sovereign over us? What does it mean that God is present with us? How can these three characteristics of God decrease fear in our lives and increase obedience in our lives?

What does this passage teach us practically?

  • We were asked to consider three things as a result of Genesis 46:1-47:12.  In our group setting, answer the following questions.

    • Is God calling you to something uncomfortable?

      • What might this “something” be that He is calling you to? What first steps do you think you need to take to explore this new venture/obedience?

      • How might knowing God from this passage, along with having your Growth Group’s support, aid you in your walk of faith?

    • Will you trust that God is with you as you go?

    • Will you trust that God can work powerfully through your simple, surrendered life?
