Read Genesis 40

“Calm seas never were made for great captains.”, said one who loved Jason deeply.

Main Claim: God’s people may sometimes be forgotten by man, but we are always remembered by God.

Three Questions - From Genesis 40

What does this passage teach us historically?

Summary:  The setting is a prison. Joseph, in prison, interprets the disturbing dreams of Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker, who were also in jail for offending the King. His interpretation of the Chief Cupbearer’s dream was one of restoration, but the interpretation of the Chief Baker’s dream was one of execution. These predictions came true in three days. The chapter ends surprisingly, as Joseph, who asked to be remembered by the King and released from prison, was forgotten for another two years.

  • The chapter begins by saying, “Some time after this.” To what does “after this” refer? In what ways does the recorded history found in Chapters 37 & 39 demonstrate God at work in the life of Joseph?

  • In the current chapter, what are some indications that God was always with Joseph?

  • What was Joseph’s request after interpreting the dreams? How did you feel about Joseph after reading verse 23?

What does this passage teach us theologically?

  • God always remembers His covenant people.

  • When referring to God, what does “remember” mean?

  • What does “covenant” mean as it relates to God’s people?

  • What are some situations in which believing that God ALWAYS remembers His people stretches your faith (to the point of snapping)?

What does this passage teach us practically?

  • God remembers you when . . .

    • You have an unexpected setback.  What can you share with your Growth Group that illustrates a setback in your life? How did you feel in the midst of the setback? What were you thinking as you went through this setback? How did God teach you that He remembers you always? How do you now look at setbacks? What are some ways you can use this experience to comfort those going through a setback? What prayer would be fitting to pray for someone going through an unexpected setback?

    • You are forgotten by others. How did Jason connect 39:21 with 40:14? What does “the LORD showed him steadfast love” tell us about God’s covenant love for us? In what ways will remembering that God always remembers you help when you are forgotten by another person?  How did Jason, ending his message with the story of the thief on the cross, impact your heart?
