Read aloud Genesis 31:17-55. Pray together.

Genesis 31:17-55

LAUNCHING QUESTION

After gathering together on Sunday morning (through prayers, worship in song, interacting with others, installing Deacons and an Elder, listening to the sermon, receiving the Lord’s Supper, etc.), in what ways were we helped to wholeheartedly follow Jesus Christ by knowing Him and making Him known? How can the main idea of the message help equip us to help others?

Main Idea: God mercifully preserves His covenant people and sets us apart from the world.

Three Questions - From Genesis 31:17-55

What does this passage teach us historically?

  • Setting:  Jacob flees from Laban, taking his family and possessions back to Canaan. Laban pursues them out of anger. But God protects His people.

  • What were a couple of possible interpretations Pastor Jason provided us over Rachel taking her father’s idols?

  • How and why did God protect Jacob and his family from the hot anger of Laban?

  • What insights were we to draw over the description “God saw Jacob’s affliction?”

What does this passage teach us theologically?

  • What are a few insights into God’s character?

  • What does God intend for His covenant people? (Hint: to be set apart for His glory and the good of others)

  • What does “set apart from the world” mean in today’s culture?

What does this passage teach us practically?

  •  Live as one who is set apart from the world.

    • What are some practical ways you can apply this exhortation?

    • How will obeying the exhortation impact your growth in Christ? Your witnessing of Christ?

  • God’s merciful preservation is for you

  • Why do you need God’s mercies? What prayer requests will you entrust to each other in light of these reasons (Keep the emphasis on God and His merciful heart)? Stop and pray for one another.

  • What past examples come to mind of God preserving you in the midst of sin and suffering? How have these interventions affected your spiritual growth? In what ways are you more sympathetic to others as a result of God’s mercy toward you? How does God’s mercy over you manifest in patience with others? How can you see someone else’s misery as an opportunity to serve God’s grace to them?  Based on the text and message of Genesis 31:17-55, what will empower you to talk mercifully with someone who is angry, fearful, despondent, aloof, or manifesting strange behavior?
